  • Jennifer Hattabaugh

    PROGRAM MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR

The Journey of a Defense Leader: From the Front Lines to the Classroom

I have always believed that a life of service would be my calling. From a young age, I was captivated by the stories of innovation, strategy, and perseverance that defined the U.S. military. What I didn’t realize at the time was how my career would grow to span over two decades and lead me to a unique role—bridging the gap between cutting-edge technology, strategic decision-making, and the education of future leaders.

A Path Paved by Dedication and Learning

The foundation of my career began at the University of Maryland University College, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. This was a stepping stone to my MBA from Columbia Southern University, which deepened my understanding of business dynamics and set the tone for what would come next. My certifications in Program Management and Acquisitions Leadership further honed my ability to navigate the complexities of defense acquisition.

    Operational Beginnings

My early career was shaped by hands-on operations as part of the U.S. Air Force. In Turkey, I coordinated projects for OPERATION NORTHERN WATCH and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM. These experiences not only taught me the value of logistics and planning but also the importance of cross-cultural communication and diplomacy. Negotiating with Turkish Nationals and the Royal Air Force was challenging but rewarding, building skills I would use throughout my career.

    Advancing Munitions Programs and Technology

Over time, I transitioned into program management, overseeing some of the most critical munitions programs in the Department of Defense. As a Lead Program Manager for PEO Weapons at Eglin AFB, I managed over $750 million in programs, focusing on bringing advanced technologies from research to production. This role was transformative, allowing me to lead teams, develop data-driven acquisition strategies, and ensure our warfighters received the best tools for their missions.

A Shift to Education and Mentorship

In 2022, I embraced a new chapter as a Professor of Program Management at the Defense Acquisition University. Here, I found a calling not only to train the next generation of acquisition professionals but also to foster innovation in training methods. Working with over 1,200 students from various branches of the military, I developed tailored curricula, conducted workshops, and introduced data-driven insights to acquisition education. Collaborating with industry and government stakeholders, I bridged the gap between policy, technology, and practical application. This is my story, and it’s far from over. With each new challenge, I remain committed to making a lasting impact in the defense community and beyond.
